On The Might Of Princes - Where You Are And Where You Want To Be

"I'll scream it until your ears bleed, you'll always have a friend in me."

Not to get all repetitive but here's another one of my favourite albums. Weird how you'd describe these guys as being a Post-Hardcore/Emo band, but they have a sound that you can't even compare to Farside. I guess it's because OTMOP can be also bunched in with a lot of those screamo "SKRAMZ" bands of the 90's, but even then they don't really fit in too well there. If this can be considered screamo, skram elitiests please don't hurt me for calling them screamo if they aren't, then this is by far my favourite screamo album.

Anyways, I'll just let the music do the talking and you can decide for yourself what you think of it.

Here's a video of them performing the song "For Meg".

Farside - The Monroe Doctrine

"I must have had a dream about you, cause I woke up in the worst of moods, and when I looked at the clock my day was already ruined."

This is one of my favourite albums ever. I think I could listen to it on repeat for days. 90's Post-hardcore/Emo from Orange County. I'd suggest reading along while listening, some of the lyrics will completely slay you. There's some pretty hardcore sounding parts, then it'll switch to the next track and it'll be an almost acoustic-like ballad.

Highlights on this record would be "I Hope You're Unhappy", "I'm Not Shy, I Just Don't Like You" and "Moral Straightjacket".

If you check anything out on this blog make THIS IT.

Fight Against The Freeway System - Say Your Word? (2006-2008)

I basically threw this compilation together for my own personal usage, since I was tired of having a bunch of random tracks laying around. FATFS (Later The War Torn Sky) was a post-hardcore band from Halifax, NS (BIG SUPRISE). Some catchy stuff up in this. Compilation contains the 06 Demo, some older demo recordings of songs, and some recordings that were recorded throughout 2007-2008.

Tigers Jaw - S/T

Tigers Jaw makes the kind of music that does strange things to people. In the few years they've been together, the group and its ever morphing lineup (with Adam McIlwee and Ben Walsh as the two constant members) has established itself as one of the most creative in the Scranton scene (creative bands in Scranton being few and far between these days notwithstanding).

This new, self titled album, takes things in a new direction. It's one the group had been hinting at, with recent live shows finding the group evolved into a tight, five piece rock band. Coming after a series of basement recordings, the sound of the group in a studio is the first noticeable change; the clarity allows for more of the subtle touches to seep through. But the most important thing is the songs themselves. And we're serious when we say that this is one incredible collection of songs. A few old favorites appear again in reworked, tightened-up forms ("The Sun", "Meals On Wheels", "HEAT"), and the newer tracks exhibit a heretofore unseen level of honesty and earnestness. With the Scranton scene almost unrecognizable from what it was only a year or two ago, Tigers Jaw has proven capable of carrying the torch; far and away the most talented young band for miles around. Seriously, no contest whatsoever.

Unbroken - Life.Love.Regret

Unbroken was a hardcore band from San Diego, California. They were influential in the Southern California hardcore scene during the mid-to-late 1990s. The band chose the name Unbroken because they wanted to emphasize their dedication to the straight edge philosophy of drug abstinence. However, most of the members have since given up this belief.

The band’s members were also in the groups Struggle, Swing Kids , Kill Holiday, Julia, Some Girls, Smooth Man Automatic, Johnny Angel, Stabbed By Words, and Over My Dead Body before, during, and after Unbroken’s existence.

Guitarist Eric Allen committed suicide 3 years after the break up of the band. The band reformed soon after Eric’s death for 1 show as a benefit to Eric’s family.

This is probably my favourite hardcore record. The emotion going through this record is too intense to put to words. Musically it very much sounds like the 90's. Heavy, slow (with some fast parts defintely influenced from Slayer,) and powerful from front to back. Lyric wise it's honest and comes straight from the heart...a heart full of bitterness and hate. Life.Love.Regret is definitely one of, if not the most, influential albums in heavy hardcore.

Jamie & Brandon - Acoustic Split

A 6 track acoustic split by Jamie Rhoden of Title Fight and Wilkes-Barre resident Brandon Setta, who held up guitar duties in Gone Mad. Very great, raw-sounding, acoustic stuff on this. Tracklist is unknown.

Achilles - Hospice

Achilles is a technical hardcore band formed by members of previous Rochester hardcore bands Building on Fire, the breaking project, and Standfast. Josh Dillion plays bass, Rob “Nooch” Antonucci plays guitar, Chris Browne plays drums, and Rory Van Grol sings. They have released a demo on Luchador Records, a split with Syracuse metalcore band Engineer on Hex Records, and two full length albums entitled “The Dark Horse” and most recently “Hospice” also on Hex Records. Known for their awe inspiring live performances and dark, revealing lyrics, they are not a band to be missed.

Chris Browne later went on to Polar Bear Club, while Rory Van Grol is in Soul Control. They say they aren't broken up, they just don't have much time now that the side-projects have come to the forefront.

Hospice, released on May 8, 2007 through Hex Records, is the sophomore full-length studio album and fifth release from the Rochester-based hardcore band Achilles.
